A student's best friend is...

…a book!  That was the theme of the official opening of the ‘Libro Amigo’ library at the school in San Jacinto when students from all the different year groups took part in the ceremony.  Led by two of the students themselves, the ceremony included a dance, a short talk about the importance of reading from one of the school’s best students and a donation of books.

The opening came after several weeks of hard work when the Nuevas Esperanzas team helped to order all the books and the students themselves repainted the library.  With the bookcases in place, Marjorie Cadena from Nuevas Esperanzas supervised the ordering of the books according to age and type to make the library more accessible and easier for the students to use.  On behalf of the school, the Director thanked all those involved and Jorge Murillo from Nuevas Esperanzas reminded the students that a book can be a friend, offering new ideas and new hope for the future.

The aim of the project reflected in the opening ceremony is to promote and encourage reading amongst the students, so prizes were awarded to two students who were able to tell the crowd about a book they had read.  One prize was given for an account of a poem by Nicaragua’s most famous poet, Rubén Darío, and the second went to a retelling of Little Red Riding Hood from a primary school student.  The competition gave the students a taste of what is to come as more prizes will be offered in the future for book reviews and other projects using the library.
