New Hope under a new name
In November 2005, Nuevas Esperanzas (meaning “New Hope”) was launched,
merging the staff and ongoing projects of Mercy Ships Nicaragua with a local
charity, FUNDAPADELE (Fundación para el
Desarrollo de León). With the
closure of Mercy Ships’ operations in Nicaragua at the end of October, we
became an independent programme operating under the umbrella of
FUNDAPADELE. In February we moved our
office to a room in FUNDAPADELE’s building, just a block away from the old
base.
We now have a team of 13 staff. The focus of our work is with rural
communities who are trapped in poverty through displacement, lack of capital or
dependency. The work is not only
concerned with the alleviation of poverty but also with building capacity in
communities, including those that are vulnerable to natural disasters.
