Walking for water – in Yorkshire!
A
group of 13 intrepid walkers from Mendlesham Christian Fellowship in Suffolk have completed a
gruelling 40 km walk taking in Yorkshire’s "Three Peaks”
to raise money for a water project in Nicaragua. On one of the hottest days of the UK summer
so far, the 13 set off at 4am to try to climb the three peaks of Pen-y-Ghent,
Whernside and Ingleborough, a total of around 5000 feet in time to get back for a very
important world cup football match between England and Portugal! It was a glorious sunny day but when the legs
were aching and the final peak seemed unattainable they reminded themselves
that they were walking for water so that those in the community of San Jacinto
won’t have to. Although the result of
the football match was not worth rushing back for, the likely total of £3000
raised by the sponsored walk meant it was worth every step.
This was not the first time the
people from Mendlesham had put themselves to the test to help those in San Jacinto. In April
it was brains rather than legs which felt the strain when a quiz night was
held. The event was very well attended
and raised almost £1000, including the auction of a Nicaraguan rocking
chair. It was generally agreed that the
round of questions on Nicaragua was the hardest of them all!
We really appreciate the support of
all at Mendlesham Christian Fellowship for the churches project in San Jacinto.
