Lights, camera, action...
For a week in June, the work of the Nuevas Esperanzas team came under the spotlight when Hywel George, a documentary film maker from Wales, visited us to make two short films.
The first few days focussed on the rainwater
harvesting projects in San Jacinto. We filmed a meeting with
the leaders of the four churches and visited several of the tanks. Community members were happy to be
interviewed about their involvement with the project and the difficulties in
accessing clean water which the project addresses. The thunderstorms came at just the right
moment for us to film rainwater harvesting in action! The next day took our mini film crew up the
volcano as they braved the steep muddy track on horseback which leads to the community
of El Ojochal de Listón . There they saw
the rainwater tank which helps reduce the need for the daily four hour journey
to collect water.
During the second part of the week the
attention shifted to La Palmerita and a film about the story of one of the families
who first came to the site in 2001 when they had to leave their homes in the department
of Matagalpa. Maxima’s youngest child
was only three years old when they left the north, joining the march to Managua to protest
about the conditions they faced and Daniel remembers clearly those difficult
months of travelling and then arriving at the site with nothing. We accompanied Maxima, Daniel and his older
brother, Mainor, tracing their roots back to La Isla de Peñas Blancas, nestled
in the mountains with beautiful views of the lush green hillsides in the coffee
growing highlands of Nicaragua. There they showed us the
home they had left, the school the children attended and introduced us to other
family members.
The DVD of these two short films will be
available in August and will be distributed to churches and other organisations
to promote the work of Nuevas Esperanzas.
